I’m Matt Yan, a freelance journalist based in New York.

I primarily cover real estate, food and culture. Most recently, I was a real estate reporter at The New York Times and a member of its 2024-25 fellowship class, a program for early-career journalists.

At The Times, I wrote features about living near a restaurant with a long line, cannabis paraphernalia becoming the new home décor and a pink building. I’m drawn to stories that help readers or guide them down an unexpected direction. I’ve also reported for The San Francisco Chronicle, The Boston Globe, Edible DC and The Huntington News, where I was the editor-in-chief.
